James Logan High School students have had extraordinary access to on-campus health care since 1994, and, in recognition of that, he Logan Health Center hosted its 12th anniversary celebration Thursday at The Spot.


A celebration was held from 5-7 pm in the Spot, which is located in the school cafeteria. Festivities included performances by the hip-hop elements group of James Logan, the Aztec Dancers, Peers In Action and much more. An informative slideshow about the hisory of the health center was also shown to the public and refreshments were served.

Carnell Edwards, the assistant superintendent from the New Haven Unified School District, spoke at the celebration. Admission to the event was free, and youth, especially, were encouraged to attend the event.

“Since 1994, the Logan Health Center has been dedicated to ensuring a healthy student body at James Logan High School by providing low-cost basic health care, health education, advocacy, referrals and youth empowerment programs in a non-judgmental, confidential and youth-focused environment," according to fliers available in the health center, "The Logan Health Center advocates for holistic health care, paying careful attention to the dynamic relationship between mind, body and spirit.”

The Heath Center offers a variety of medical services such as pelvic exams, pap smears, vision and hearing screening, STDs and HIV testing, TB testing, and even sports physicals; most of which is free. The center also promotes preventive actions including family planing and contraception.

The Heath center prescribes the birth control to teenage girls which they can pick up at the neighboring clinic, Tiburcio Vasquez Heath Center. Condoms are also distributed at no cost to anyone one who requests them. The Health Center also has a counseling program available to any and all students, providing them an outlet for their stress and problems.

The health center held their 12th anniversary celebration to acknowledge their achievements, and to thank the district, administration, and students of Logan for taking advantage of their services.
