By Rick LaPlante, New Haven Schools Public Information Officer

The New Haven Community Forum will hold its first meeting of the 2007-08 school year Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the new Cabello Student Support Center, 4500 Cabello St., on the former Cabello Elementary School campus.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. and will focus on the District's emphasis on literacy; in particular, the Writing Workshop curriculum being implemented at the elementary schools. The meeting also will include a tour of the new facilities at Cabello, where the District has opened a pre-school program and a community day school, holds parent classes and is planning a parent center, and will open a mid-year kindergarten program in January.

The New Haven Community Forum was created during the 2006-07 school year, as part of the District’s effort to give parents and community members access to information and an opportunity to contribute ideas. Meetings, hosted by Superintendent Dr. Pat Jaurequi, include a presentation on a primary topic, followed by either a “round-table” or small-group discussion. Meetings also include an “open forum” in which other topics of general interest can be addressed.

This year’s schedule includes four evening meetings, Sept. 25, Nov. 27, Jan. 22 and April 22, and two daytime forums, designed for local business and community leaders, Oct. 23 and Feb. 19.
