Prayers for Bobby
By Melissa Mota, Courier Staff Writer

The film is very emotional and heartbreaking! It's the story of the life of Bobby Griffith, whose live was cut short because he decided to commit suicide over the self-hatred that attended his homosexuality. The fact that his mother's blind faith in her religion led her to reject Bobby's sexual orientation drove him to kill himself. He kept diaries in which he expressed his self-hatred and his wish for a cure.

The film made me cry. It is very well done and the actors were stupendous in their roles. I felt as if I were there with them, mourning for Bobby.

Fact is, all this happened not from here; the family lived in Walnut Creek.

The movie is definitely up there in my favorites. It shows what happened within the Griffith family, a religious whose mother ran the household with the help of her Bible. It was a true story, so it broke my heart even more to know that.

A scene that stood out to me was when Bobby's mother made the transition from a woman full of judgment to a woman that accepted both the fact that her baby was gay and that he was no longer with her. She even defended the gay community and became an activist.

This movie is a definite must see. Also look for the book that started it all, Prayers for Bobby- A Mother's Coming to Terms With the Suicide of her Gay Son by Leroy Aarons.
